Summertime is winding slowly to an end and Steve and I, at Labour Beat, have been enjoying the winding down of this time of year.
We kicked off August with our Fabulous Music Special where we got to play Anne Fenney, Martin Carthy and Lucinda Williams among other great musicians. It was great that three of the seven songs we played were by Canadians.
Next episode we shifted focus to the Victoria scene with an interview with Sean of the South Island Workers Cultural and Education League who are trying to bring more joy into labour activism. As part of that program, we lifted from one of our favourite sources BC Labour Heritage Centre’s ‘On the Line’ program hosted by Rod Mickleburgh. This episode was about solidarity, and the sympathy strikes in BC in 1919 in support of the General Strike in Winnipeg.
The present episode (#59) will be devoted to the Wobblies or as they are more formally known, the Industrial Workers of the World (https://www.iww.org), with an interview of long time member Dave Tucker and a piece from ‘Labor History Today’ on the anniversary of the publication of The Little Red Songbook (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Red_Songbook)
After that we are lining up an interview with Anelyse Weiler (https://anelyseweiler.com), from the University of Victoria’s Dept. of Sociology. She specializes in agricultural workers, especially around health and safety aspects like extreme heat and pesticides.
So tune into DIG-FM and learn more about workers, unions and the people struggling for social justice.
