SUMMARY:International Overdose Awareness Day
DESCRIPTION:Everyone is invited to gather at the Comox Valley Art Gallery at 580 Duncan Ave. to honor loved ones lost\, call for change\, share stories to raise awareness\, and support evidence-based overdose prevention strategies. August 31st 2026 marks the 25th annual International Overdose Awareness Day. This year’s theme honors the dedication of those who have carried this work forward over 25 years\, while inviting more people into the conversation. It calls on all of us – across cultures\, professions\, and communities – to keep learning\, to speak openly\, and to act with compassion and on evidence. Together\, we can create a future where fewer lives are lost\, where support is within reach for everyone\, and where one day this global moment of remembrance is no longer necessary.

SUMMARY:40th Anniversary of Miners Memorial
DESCRIPTION:When the Cumberland mine workers descended into the coal caverns\, they faced the toughest of work environments: cramped\, wet\, dark\, and dirty. There was a constant fear of danger at every turn\, with roof collapses and flooding both common risks. The Cumberland coal seams had a reputation for expelling gas\, increasing the likelihood of explosions. \nEveryone is invited to join the 40th Anniversary of Miners Memorial\, which will host Juno-winning singer-songwriter Maria Dunn\, live in concert on Thursday\, June 11\, and a labour history walking tour and Songs of the Workers on Friday\, June 12. As per tradition\, Saturday will start with a pancake breakfast\, followed by graveside vigils\, a community luncheon and “Celebrating 40 Years” – a history panel about labour activism and Miners Memorial. There will also be music workshops\, guided tours of the museum\, and a labour history canoe tour. \nThe 40th Anniversary of Miners Memorial is hosted by the Cumberland Museum & Archives\, with support from the Campbell River\, Courtenay and District Labour Council\, Comox Valley Regional District\, CUPE\, BCGEU and First Credit Union. \nVisit minersmemorial.ca for more information.
